INFLUENZA OUTBREAK AND HEAT AT PEMBINA PLACE MPCH

Dear Residents and Families:

Pembina Place MPCH has declared an outbreak of Influenza A as 2 residents on the 2nd floor have tested positive for the virus. Residents who are sick with Influenza are being treated with a medication called Tamiflu (or Oseltamivir) to lessen their symptoms and prevent them from developing pneumonia. Residents who may have been exposed to the virus are being offered Tamiflu prophylaxis to prevent them from getting the virus. We are monitoring all Residents carefully for any symptoms of Influenza and will offer antiviral treatment doses for Residents who become ill in consultation with the physician. We asked for consent to use Tamiflu in the event of an outbreak at your loved one’s last care conference. If you have consented at the care conference but have changed your mind, please contact the nursing station to let us know. If you refused Tamiflu at the care conference but would like your loved one to receive it now, you can also contact the nurses to let them know.

If possible, we ask that you reschedule your visits to another time. If you do visit, please do not visit with children and limit visitation to 2 visitors at a time. Visitation can continue even for those Residents who have tested positive or are on isolation however visits must occur in resident’s rooms only until the outbreak is over. All visitors must sanitize their hands before and after visiting. Please only visit one resident if you do choose to visit, and do not come for a visit if feeling ill yourself.   We also strongly encourage mask usage while visiting Residents.

If you have any questions about your Resident, please contact the Nursing Stations.

We would also like to update you on the heating situation in the Personal Care Home.  We are pleased to inform you that the heating unit on the top of the building has been fixed. The temperature in the PCH will slowly warm up. Unfortunately, the lack of heat caused three pipes to burst on the third floor over the past 5 days affecting certain areas including one resident room and the sunroom. However, it will be a while before we can replace damaged equipment and can resume all activities in the sunroom. We ask that you visit the residents in their rooms until we have the repairs completed.   Please check the website for any new developments as they occur.

Please keep our Residents and Staff in your thoughts and prayers.
